Ivana Baquero joins #TheLoveIssue of Xmag to discuss the progress of LGBTIQ+ representation in the industry and shares her experiences and dreams
Ivana Baquero has captivated us from her beginnings in Pan's Labyrinth (which earned her a Goya for Best New Actress) to her exciting leading role in The Shannara Chronicles. Today she joins Xmag in an edition that celebrates the LGBTIQ+ community, sharing her experiences, challenges, and dreams for the future.
The evolution of LGBTQ+ representation in the entertainment industry has been an important journey for her. From her beginning to now, she has witnessed a significant change: "I have noticed an increase in the quantity, and above all, in the quality, of characters representing the LGBTQ+ community," she tells us.
Memorable Experiences on Set
Reflecting on her time in The New Daughter, where she shared the screen with Kevin Costner, Ivana reflects on the influence of working with someone so experienced:
"When you're an actor of Kevin's caliber, you're not just an 'actor' on set – you're a leader." This experience taught her a lot about professionalism and generosity among colleagues.
A Journey of Growth and Learning
With a career spanning almost two decades, from her debut in Pan's Labyrinth, Ivana has experienced a journey of personal and professional growth: "Since then, I've gone from childhood to adolescence to adulthood. In all those stages, there is fundamental learning."
Looking to the future, Ivana revealed her desire to venture into the spy genre:
"I would love to do a spy movie or series, where my character has to act as an undercover agent and find themselves in various and highly tense situations."
Challenges and Passions in Acting
Speaking about the challenges in her career, Ivana highlighted that each project presents its own challenges, whether emotional, physical, or otherwise. But it is her passion for telling meaningful stories that drives her.
Commitment to LGBTQ+ Visibility
In LGBTQ+ Pride Month, Ivana responds about how we can improve the participation of people belonging to the collective in the film industry: "By offering visibility and telling stories that matter, that represent, and that reach all kinds of audiences."
Balance Outside of Acting
Outside the world of acting, Ivana finds balance in being with her loved ones and exploring the world through travel and culinary adventures.
Adventures in New Zealand
Regarding her experience in "The Shannara Chronicles," she described the filming in New Zealand as "a dream come true," although she admitted that the physical preparation was intense, but worth it!
With her contagious energy and passion for her craft, Ivana Baquero continues to dazzle on screen while navigating the challenges and emotions of life as an actress.
